Purpose of the Education Review Office (ERO) Reviews
The Education Review Office | Te Tari Arotake Mātauranga (ERO) is the New Zealand government’s external education evaluation agency. ERO evaluates and reports on the education and care of learners in schools, kura, kōhanga reo, puna reo, and early childhood services.
ERO reviews provide assurance to parents and the wider school community about the quality of education that schools offer and students receive. Each ERO report answers the key question: “How effectively is this school’s curriculum promoting student learning—engagement, progress, and achievement?”
Beyond this central question, ERO reports assess the quality of education and learning outcomes for all students, including specific groups such as Māori students, Pacific students, and students with special needs. ERO also evaluates the school’s systems for maintaining and sustaining ongoing improvements.
The report addresses five main questions about the school:
- How well is the school achieving equitable outcomes for all children?
- How effectively does the school respond to Māori and other children whose learning and achievement need acceleration?
- What school processes effectively enable achievement of equity and excellence?
- What further development is needed in school processes to achieve equity and excellence?
- How well placed is the school to accelerate the achievement of all children who need it?
